Article #29
Cats are much more independent than dogs; they do their business indoors, they clean themselves and require little attention. On the other hand, you still need to pay attention to them regularly because cats can get sick just like humans can.
Of course, their symptoms will be different than humans but they do have a certain
similarity. One of the symptoms that cats can get when they are feeling sick is throwing
up. If you notice that your cat is throwing up, you should try to figure out why
it is doing so.
If you notice that your cat is vomiting for the first time, you will most likely
get very worried. The good thing is that there is no immediate need to worry after
a cat throws up. Cats tend to eat anything that they can find, especially when they
are younger. If you have plants or flowers in your home, you cat will probably want
to eat it.
If you notice that your cat smells the plants, move the plants to a higher area because
this is one of the biggest causes for cat vomiting. The reason is because a plant
is not actually food and it will irritate the interior of a cat's stomach. Teaching
them to eat nothing but the food that you give them from the moment that you get
the cat is very important to avoid your cat throwing up.
Although you have no reason to worry immediately after your cat vomits, it is important
to do a quick inspection of the vomit to check for signs of blood. Bleeding while
throwing up can be a sign of a much more serious cause. The causes of the blood appearing
in your cat's vomit are numerous but are never a good thing.
One reason could be that you cat has eaten an object that cannot be digested. Another reason for bleeding while throwing up is that the cat could have an inflammation anywhere in the body between the mouth and all the way to the kidneys.
Prevention is the key to avoiding such problems which can become much worse if they
remain unnoticed. In order to prevent such sicknesses you should keep your cat on
a healthy diet. This means removing anything that may seem edible to a feline such
as plants, plastics and even feathered objects.
Once your cat has thrown up, you will have to wait before knowing how bad it really
is. If the vomiting continues at a constant rate then you will have to get your cat
treated and the same goes for blood in the vomit. However, if your cat has only thrown
up once, you can still treat it from home. Because vomiting gets rid of most of the
liquids in the stomach, it can cause dehydration. Keeping your cat hydrated after
it vomits is one of the best ways to get it back on its feet.
Make sure that you only give your cat water after it threw up to avoid any other complications. Make sure that you do not overfeed your cat after it vomits because this can cause its stomach to have trouble dealing with it.
Remembering to inspect the cat's vomit before cleaning it up is vital even though
it may seem repelling. This is the only way to ensure that the vomiting is nothing
serious. If blood or feces appears in the vomit then you will want to hydrate the
feline immediately and withdraw food for a few hours. As stated above, the best way
to avoid such illnesses is to prevent them from being able to reach plants or other
things that they may want to eat.
